| 1. | Zenodo | Open Library | Zenodo is derived from Zenodotus, the first librarian of the Ancient Library of Alexandria and father of the first recorded use of metadata, a landmark in library history.
Zenodo code is itself open source, and is built on the foundation of the InvenioRDM research data management repository, which is also open source. The code, work-in-progress and open issues are shared openly in GitHub, and contributions to any aspect are welcomed from anyone.
All meta data is openly available under CC0 licence, and all open content is openly accessible through open APIs.
Open to all suggestions for new features, via GitHub, and especially open to all contributions of code via pull requests!
Passionate about Open Science
Built and developed by researchers, to ensure that everyone can join in Open Science.
The OpenAIRE project, in the vanguard of the open access and open data movements in Europe was commissioned by the EC to support their nascent Open Data policy by providing a catch-all repository for EC funded research. CERN, an OpenAIRE partner and pioneer in open source, open access and open data, provided this capability and Zenodo was launched in May 2013.
In support of its research programme CERN has developed tools for Big Data management and extended Digital Library capabilities for Open Data. Through Zenodo these Big Science tools could be effectively shared with the long-tail of research. |
| 2. | The eCampusOntario Open Library | Open Library | The eCampusOntario Open Library provides educators and learners with access to more than 1,900 free and openly-licensed educational resources. The library was launched in 2017 in partnership with BCcampus. Since the initial launch, eCampusOntario has sought to continually improve the library to meet the needs of Ontarios postsecondary educators and learners. Thanks to the Open Publishing Infrastructure Project, a joint effort between eCampusOntario, and Toronto Metropolitan University, the library is now integrated with publishing infrastructure, allowing for the easy creation or adaption of OER. eCampusOntario has also supported enhancements to the PressbooksEDU platform, including the integration of H5P interactive content, version tracking, and cloning support. |
| 3. | Library of Open Educational Resources | Open Library | In the Library of Open Educational Resources, you can search for and share open educational resources (OER) from all levels of education. The service and its OERs are available for use by teachers, learners of all ages and everyone interested in learning. The OERs can also be found in Finna.fi, which gathers materials from museums, libraries and archives under one roof. The aoe.fi service is owned by the Finnish National Agency for Education, which develops the service in collaboration with its partners. Visit the Further information page for more info and see our guide for uploading OERs. |
| 4. | OERSI - Open Educational Resources Search Index | Open Library | OERSI, the Open Educational Resources Search Index, is a search engine for open educational resources in higher education, provided jointly by the University Library Center of North Rhine-Westphalia (hbz) and the TIB-Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library since 2020.
OERSI offers a central search entry point for educational resources from distributed national and international providers with numerous filter options. OERSI does not host any resources itself, but collects their metadata and homogenizes them to enable a uniform search.
To enable other applications to access the data, OERSI offers an open API that allows the OER search to be integrated into other platforms. Examples of this are the integration into the Lower Saxony OER portal twillo and the North Rhine-Westphalian online portal for digitally supported learning, ORCA.nrw. In addition, OERSI also offers the prepared metadata for download in the form of regular dumps.
All planning and development is openly documented on the GitLab platform. The OERSI Kanban board provides a constantly updated overview of past, current and future tasks. Open and transparent processes offer various ways to participate, from simple feedback via the contact form to reporting bugs and requests for new features. Details can be found in the Guidelines for collaboration. |

American Government is a high-enrollment course at community colleges satisfying the American Institutions requirement for transfer to a California State University. Brian Barrick, an instructor at Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC), had been teaching with the widely-adopted OpenStax American Government textbook for several years in his introductory U.S. Government courses when he realized that students could benefit from a free audio version of the text. An auditory learner himself, he decided to combine his passions for access to higher education, political science, and emerging technologies to produce an openly-licensed audiobook adaptation.
Audiobooks benefit many learners including those with learning disabilities or for whom English is a second language. Support for diverse learners is a major focus of the CC ECHO project, which was able to provide the funding necessary for the additional audio equipment and staff time needed to complete the project. Barrick was also able to hire a student to record portions of the text, adding to its usability and interest.
Over the span of eight months, he recorded, produced, and published the 17 chapters of the entire textbook. Strong interest in the recordings was reported within 2 months of publication:
